Wakaranai Lodge x Raven Outdoors
Central Hokkaido holds some of the best wild river fishing in Japan.
The Sorachi. The Mu. The Tokachi. The Chūbetsu.
Not famous in the way some rivers are famous, but known by the people who know them.
These are three to five day fully catered fly fishing trips, with Wakaranai Lodge as basecamp. Everything is handled: meals, transport, accommodation, and expert guiding from Ryota at Raven Outdoors, so you can focus entirely on the water.
The Guiding
Ryota runs Raven Outdoors, specialising in fly fishing and backcountry ski guiding across Central Hokkaido. He grew up in the Furano area and has spent his life in these mountains and rivers.
His guiding combines real technical knowledge with deep respect for the environment and the craft.
This isn't about famous spots or fixed itineraries. It's about choosing where to go based on what the rivers are actually doing: water levels, weather, and conditions.
That flexibility is what makes fishing here special.
These trips are fly-only and best suited for anglers comfortable fishing moving water. The focus is on the fishing itself: reading water, moving thoughtfully, and making the most of what the conditions give you.
Typical species include yamame, iwana, rainbow trout, and amemasu.

Best Time to Fish
Fly fishing in Central Hokkaido follows the rhythm of snowmelt and seasonal insect hatches. While the rivers fish throughout much of the summer, two periods consistently stand out.
Late May – June
As the snowmelt stabilizes, rivers clear and the first major insect hatches begin. Mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies bring trout to the surface, making this one of the most exciting times for dry fly fishing.
Water levels are healthy, fish are active after the long winter, and the rivers feel wild and full of life.
September – Early October
Autumn is another outstanding window. Cooler temperatures bring fish back into feeding patterns, and the crowds of summer disappear.
The rivers run clear, the mountains begin to turn colour, and conditions often favour larger fish moving through the systems.
Typical Species
- Yamame (Cherry Salmon)
- Iwana (White-spotted Char)
- Rainbow Trout
- Amemasu (Sea-run Char in some systems)
